Brooklyn Eagle

The Brooklyn Eagle archives are now online:

Founded in 1841 by Isaac Van Anden and Henry Cruse Murphy, the Eagle was published as a daily newspaper for 114 consecutive years without missing a single edition. The newspaper, which was originally conceived as a temporary political forum for the 1842 election, ironically lived the longest and absorbed all other Brooklyn daily papers except the Brooklyn Citizen. At one point the Eagle actually became the nation’s most widely read afternoon newspaper. Unusual among major metropolitan daily newspapers of that time period, the Eagle chronicled national and international affairs as well as local news and daily life in Brooklyn. As a result the Brooklyn Daily Eagle provides a window into Brooklyn’s past, as well as documentation of national and international events that shaped history.

The Eagle played a vital role in the community of Brooklyn’s self-identification as separate and even better than Manhattan. Brooklyn existed as an independent city until the consolidation with New York City in 1898. Conceiving and promoting the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Eagle took an active role in developing the bridge a symbol of Brooklyn’s pride. The paper also coined the phrase describing Brooklyn as “the borough of homes and churches.” With offices in Brooklyn, New York, Washington, Paris and London, the Eagle became one of the borough’s greatest institutions.

Distinguished editors of the Eagle included Walt Whitman, Thomas Kinsella, St. Clair McKelway, Cleveland Rogers, and Frank D. Schroth.

The rise and fall of the Eagle coincided with the economic development in Brooklyn. The paper folded in 1955 because of a prolonged strike called by the New York Newspaper Guild. At the time it closed it employed 681 people and did an annual business in the sum of approximately $6 million.

  11. I have been researching a chief yeoman george h ellis (1874-1898). he was the only american killed during the naval battle of santiago cuba, 3 july 1898. he had a huge memorial service in oct of 1898, and was buried on or about 24 nov 1898, at the evergreens cemetery. I found out all the after death info, and much more in your archives, up to 1902. in 1902 there was still a call for a memorial, but I cannot find out, or verify Ellis,s burial location. He is a very forgotten war hero of great moral charecter, who died in the heat of battle, buy having his head knocked off by an enemy shell! thousands where turned away from his memorial, and his faith in God was above reproach, I wish I could finish up his story with knowing where was he buried, is there a memorial? any info on George H ellis after 1902??? thank you

  18. I have an original sports cartoon that might have been published in the Eagle but the artist’s name was snipped out. Subject matter: Branch Rickey and son “Twig” knocking on the door of Wrigley Field in Chicago with a satchel full of money and the promise of making the Cubs a contender. From the text of the cartoon it is clear that the time frame is between the end of the 1949 baseball season and start of 1950 season (Rickey actually left for Pittsburgh at end of ’50 season)…Any help on cartoonists who worked for the Eagle in that time period? Thanks to all/Mark Fleisher

  19. I delivered the Brooklyn Eagle (late 30’s). My route was Sheepshead bay. Folded papers on Sunday, delivered all week = collect on Friday, Sat, 100 customers .06 per customer. Used bike, wore knickers and also sold life insurance – 5 cents a week. Those were the days – fond ones. After the war I opened my own printing business in NYC, wound up with 40 employees and 3 plants. Had printers ink in my blood. Still active in printing, have one plant in Florida that my son runs. Quite a memory, throwing papers from my bike and hitting the target. Ciao

After the fold of the paper he opened a sandwich shop in Ridgefield, NJ on Grand Avenue which thrived for years.
