Hasan Minhaj on racist clowning.

“There’s a barbecue flavor of Popchips. Why don’t you do it with blackface and a guy named Tyrone? Because you knew you’d get fucking buried, Popchips. Asians and Indians are the new ‘clownable minority’… we’re killing it right now, and you’re pulling us back.”

Yeah, this.

Especially working with computers, I’ve met an alarming number of people who assume that racist clowning is somehow OK, or worse: they think it’s funny. I’ll meet someone (in a business meeting!) and five minutes later, they’re doing some ridiculous caricature of an Indian support tech that never existed. I get offended by the caricature in the first place, and double-offended by the conspiracy of it – the assumption that because I’m white, I’ll greet this transgressive, unfunny, lazy, racist joke with a roar of appreciative laughter.

If you find yourself seized with the need to do a campy “Indian” accent, stop. It’s never as funny as you think it is, and everyone you haven’t offended will be awkward and uncomfortable. Racist clowning makes you a racist clown.
