Whether my Galaxy Nexus phone is plugged in or not, it always thinks it’s charging. At the same time, I’m losing 20% of my battery life every hour. Visions of having to re-Jelly Bean a replacement unit wake me in the middle of the night. Everything turns black.
Then it occurs to me that I could fix this myself. If the phone’s discharging that quickly, there’s a short somewhere. If I look at the bottom of my phone, I see only one pin in the charging port – a tongue, really – so that has to be the culprit, right? Let’s say I’m right.
I took a piece of cardboard1 and slipped it under the tongue, and bent the tongue up, away from the bottom of the port, thusly:
The phone hiccup’d, and went back into a non-charging state. I am relieved.
- I could just as well have used a toothpick or a straw. As long as it doesn’t conduct electricity, it should be fine. ↩

Thank you! It worked for me as well. Something (very small) was stuck between the tung and the bottom. Lifted the tongue with a toothpick and phone is back to non charging state. Gracias!

My phone does this too, the fix I’ve found is to shut the phone off and pull the battery out for a second after disconnecting a USB cable….
